Oppose Iowa SF293/SSF1066 -
A Restrictive Licensing
bill for Natural Health
Oppose Iowa SF293/SSB1066 because it is a monopolistic bill and calls for mandatory licensing of Naturopathic Physicians with criminal charges for unlicensed practice of the natural healing arts by practitioners such as traditional naturopaths, homeopaths, and herbalists.

Oppose the bill because the bill does not include comprehensive safe harbor health freedom exemptions for hundreds of Iowa natural health practitioners practicing in the public domain.
The bill carves out a very broad exclusive scope of practice defining "naturopathic medicine" including all of the natural health arts and complementary and alternative healing and also carves out exclusive use of titles.
The problem is that the bill makes it a crime to practice “naturopathic medicine” defined very broadly, or to use titles historically in the public domain such as “naturopath” and “naturopathy”.
These terms are used by thousands of unlicensed practitioners across the United States and have been used for generations to depict a natural approach to health care without any use of allopathic medical procedures.
Many in the natural health community do not oppose the licensing of Naturopathic Physicians per se; however they oppose any harm it might cause to access to unlicensed natural health practitioners.
Defeat SF293/SSB1066 unless it contains comprehensive safe harbor exemption amendments so that Iowa can have a win situation like Minnesota and California where there are licensed Naturopathic Doctors, and unlicensed traditional naturopaths and natural healers practicing under safe harbor exemptions.
